The mountains of northeast Georgia will surround you with natural beauty and satisfaction. An autumn visit is an absolute must! One visit to these rolling mountains and you will be hooked. Enjoy a day of hiking through Georgia’s wilderness or horseback riding through trails unique to the soft blue rimmed mountain tops of northeast Georgia. Relax in the beauty and serenity of majestic waterfalls which are found in abundance in northeast Georgia. Toccoa Falls, which is 26 feet higher than Niagara Falls, is on the Toccoa Falls College campus. Amicalola Falls, which at 729 feet is the highest waterfall in all of Georgia, has an observation bridge at the top and a reflection pond at the bottom. You can discover the exhilarating thrill of a whitewater rafting adventure down the class III, IV, and V rapids of the Chattooga River where the movie Deliverance was filmed, or sit back and relax as you tube down the Chattahoochee or Toccoa rivers. See Wildwater Rafting for more information.

Check out the concerts, festivals, carnivals, campgrounds and gardens at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds situated on beautiful Lake Chatuge in Hiawassee.

One of the most delightful northeast Georgia happenings is a trip to Lake Sidney Lanier. This 39,000 acre lake borders five Georgia counties and offers just as much in fun as it does in size. A fantastic water park, boat rentals, breathtaking lakeside cottages and campsites, wine tasting dinners, horseback riding, fishing, and two championship golf courses can make a visit to Lake Lanier one to remember. Be sure to use the “Flag This” option of the Northeast Georgia Mountains Guide to add your favorite Lake Lanier activities to your “Travel Ideas” list.

Your Northeast Mountains vacation itinerary is not complete without a visit to historic Dahlonega and nearby Helen. Dahlonega, the home of the first gold rush in the United States, offers a look into the past. Take the time to explore the shops on the charming town square. Alpine Helen, a Bavarian-style town with red roofs and cobblestone streets, gives one of the nation’s best Oktoberfest celebrations year after year. Also in nearby Cleveland is the Babyland General Hospital, home of the Cabbage Patch Kids; or check out the Toccoa area where you can visit Currahee Mountain, birthplace of Band of Brothers and The Dirty Dozen. A well-kept secret also lies in the Northeast Georgia Mountains. Numerous award-winning wineries dot the landscape, and this burgeoning industry will soon make a name for itself.

When you come to the heart of the south, you expect to eat southern style food at its best. We would not feel right if we failed to mention two legendary southern-style restaurants, The Smith House in Dahlonega and The Dillard House in Dillard, in which meals are served “family style”.

Enjoy outlet shopping at its finest by visiting the North Georgia Premium Outlets near Dawsonville or the outlet stores in Commerce that include a Tanger Outlet Center.
