Presidential Pathways - Northern Towns Area

At the northern part of the Presidential Pathways Region are several highlights for your tour. You could spend several days at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain. This stunning 13,000 acre resort offers mesmerizing beauty, luxurious accommodations, two outstanding golf courses, nature trails throughout the 17 miles of the resort, four distinct gardens with literally thousands of azaleas and flowers (a horticulturist’s delight), fishing, shooting, a butterfly center, and a relaxing spa. Callaway Gardens is more like an experience than a place. Also in Pine Mountain is the Wild Animal Safari, a 500-acre wildlife preserve, where you can have face-to-face encounters with exotic animals from six continents.

The northern half of the Presidential Pathways Region focuses on President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Just up the road from Callaway Gardens is the F. D. Roosevelt State Park. If you enjoy hiking, you should explore the 23-mile Pine Mountain trail, which offers breathtaking views and crystal-clear streams. Above Kings Gap is Dowdell’s Knob, Roosevelt’s favorite picnic spot overlooking a magnificent view of the valley below. There are also 25 miles of horse trails, and on-site is Roosevelt Stables that can provide guided tours and even overnight rides. There are also maps for those that bring their own mounts. In Warm Springs you can make presidential history come alive with a visit to the Little White House, the only house President Franklin Roosevelt ever owned and the place where he died in 1945. The Little White House is Georgia’s most visited State Historic Site. You can wander through the beautiful gardens and visit the warm springs pool where FRD took his relaxing therapeutic baths. Be sure to visit the charming Historic Village in Warm Springs for shopping at over 60 specialty shops, dining and hotels.

In LaGrange visit the Hills & Dales Estate, a 1916 southern masterpiece of a mansion that was once home to the Callaway family. Wander the grounds and see the magnificent gardens that were started in the 1800’s and were expanded by Callaway in the early 1900’s. Nearby is the LaGrange Art Museum which houses works by some of the southeast’s top artists.

Nearby is West Point Lake, which has over 500 miles of shoreline and is known as a championship fishing lake. There are parks, campgrounds, marinas and beach areas to enjoy. There are plenty of Wildlife Management Areas in this area that you can find out more information about if you enjoy hunting, fishing, birding or hiking.

The Flint River flows through this area and near Thomaston amateurs and experts can both enjoy a “Float the Flint” experience. Near Sprewell Bluff there are Class II rapids where you can enjoy a lazy float down the river. Along the infamous Yellow Jacket Shoals experts can be challenged by Class III and IV rapids. The Sprewell Bluff State Park is also located along the Flint River and provides nice picnic spots.
