Georgia has a lot to offer history buffs. There are a number of National Historic Sites as well State Historic Sites scattered throughout Georgia. These sites pertain to colonial and civil war history as well as two American Presidents. Since Georgia has been the home to many of the greatest civil rights leaders and produced many great African Americans musicians, politicians and athletes, the state has a number of sites that will be of interest to those wanting to learn about African American heritage. Some of the more popular sites include Andersonville, the Civil War prison camp that now houses a memorial to all American prisoners of war. The Little White House, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s home in Warm Springs, is the most visited state historic site.

In Atlanta, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site is home to the great civil rights leader memorial. Northwest of Atlanta you must visit the Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield, where much of the Battle for Atlanta took place.

Along the Georgia coast, visit one of the many forts, such as Fort Morris in Midway, that dot the landscape – some of which are pre-revolutionary. The beautiful city of Savannah claims the nation’s largest preserved historic district. Antebellum homes are on display along Georgia’s Antebellum Trail in the Historic Heartland. And down south in Fitzgerald, you can explore the Jefferson Davis Memorial Historic Site and see where the Confederate President was captured.
