Dekalb County Area Article

Welcome to the Georgia Tourist Guide’s focus on Dekalb County, located just minutes east of Atlanta. The Dekalb County Tourist Guide can help you plan your visit so that your experience is complete and enjoyable.

Let’s begin our tour east of Atlanta in Stone Mountain Park, home of the largest exposed piece of granite in the world. This park was initially dedicated as a Civil War memorial, and the trademark carving on the side of the mountain depicts three renowned Confederates. However, today this is one of the top visitor attractions in the world – and for good reason. Stone Mountain Park offers such a variety of entertainment, including: spectacular laser and fireworks shows on the face of the mountain (every summer evening), top-notch golf courses, Georgia’s largest campground, plenty of shows and activities geared towards kids, playgrounds, festivals and concerts. There are nature trails throughout the park and you can hike to the top of the mountain for an incredible view of the Atlanta Metro region. Skyride to the top of the mountain or take a riverboat ride on the beautiful lake or ride a train around the mountain. That’s why over 4,000,000 visitors come to Stone Mountain each year!

Nearby is Stone Mountain Village, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Enjoy the wonderful specialty shops and restaurants that offer a wide variety of unique items with something for everyone.

The Fernbank Natural History Museum located between Atlanta and Decatur is a great place for families to visit. There are several permanent exhibits, special rotating exhibits, and an incredible five-story IMAX theatre, where you can startling films such as Everest, The Alps, and Coral reef Adventures. Children (and adults) will love the Giants of the Mesozoic exhibition where you can literally stand beside the largest dinosaurs to roam the planet. How about a colorful frog exhibition, or catch the nocturnal frog show. There are plenty of educational and fascinating experiences awaiting you at Fernbank. Be sure to use the “FLAG THIS” feature on your Dekalb County Tourist Guide to add items of interest, such as Fernbank, to your “My Travel Ideas” folder, so that you will not have to remember them and can quickly retrieve them.

One of the top shopping areas in Metro Atlanta is the Perimeter Mall area in northwest Dekalb. Anchored by Dillard’s, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom, Perimeter Mall hosts over 200 specialty stores. Be sure to explore the “Shopping” option on the Dekalb County Tourist Guide to discover the many great shopping opportunities in this area. There are many upscale restaurants in the area as well, including McKendricks, Chequers Seafood Grill and Seasons 52. The Crowne Plaza Hotel / Atlanta Ravinia is an excellent hotel located just across from the mall.

One of the best golf courses open to the public that is close in to Atlanta is The Heritage Golf Club, a $21 million investment located in north Dekalb County. This beautiful, but sadistic, course has huge, lightening fast greens and fairways that traverse up and down the rolling hills of this little golfing oasis.
