With beautifully restored Antebellum and Victorian homes adorning tree lined streets, you might think you have stepped back into another era. The pristine town square is dominated by the Newton County Historic Courthouse, built in 1885. Many visitors will think they have visited before, since Covington is the home for television series The Dukes of Hazzard, In the Heat of the Night and The Vampire Diaries, as well as many movies.

Come by the Visitor Information Center at 2101 Clark Street to pick up brochures for the self-guided home tour and movie locations tour. The Visitor Center also houses many articles from the area’s film history as well as several photo opportunities.

History & Heritage

Visit another era in Covington/Newton County. Formed in 1821 by the Georgia General Assembly, the area still retains its classic Southern charm. Sites of historic significance include:

Newton County Courthouse built in 1885 – remains a powerful symbol of this county’s ability to overcome any obstacle that comes its way. It is said to be the most recognizable courthouse in the Unites States.

The Brick Store – built in 1822 was the county’s first brick structure and was also a general store, stagecoach stop and housed Newton County’s first court session.

Old Church – built in 1841 and located in Oxford was the first chapel of Emory University and also served as an infirmary during the Civil War.
