Description
Exploring Beautiful Coastal Georgia since 1994
Sharing some of our favorite places with you by kayak
SouthEast Adventure has been in business since 1994 - based on St. Simons Island and in Brunswick, Georgia. Pioneering every trip we offer, our company has been integral in promoting and enhancing kayaking throughout the Golden Isles of Georgia.
SouthEast Adventure was started with the goal to provide exceptional kayaking trips through some of the widely unexplored and naturally beautiful areas along Georgia’s coast. Over time, the trips just keep getting better - with new adventures planned every year, and more people interested in sharing our unique perspective and expertise.
Georgia has over 100 miles of coast and a third of all the eastern seaboard’s marshes. Only 3 of Georgia’s 15 barrier islands are developed. With 2000 miles of tidal shoreline and remote river lowlands, the paddling opportunities on our coast are endless. The ambient climate allows for day trips to be planned year-round, while the cooler months (Nov.-April) are best for camping .
Examples of Trips
Our Cumberland Island 3-Day Trip
Our Cumberland Island 3-Day Trip is designed for the person that wants to see Georgia’s largest barrier island from a very active perspective. We paddle 12 miles to the northernmost campsite, Brickhill Bluff- which faces the mainland and the setting sun. Brickhill Bluff is widely known to be an ancient Indian settlement and was subsequently the site of many historical working villages. This bluff is the perfect staging point for our exploration of Cumberland’s north end. We camp underneath the oaks for two nights and paddle our route home on the last day. Our middle day is spent hiking the old trails past ruins of various commerce and settlement, traversing the levees over interior lakes, and finding tidal treasures on the 18 miles of totally undeveloped beach!
This trip is suitable for beginners and seasoned paddlers alike - but can sometimes be physically challenging due to weather conditions. We often recommend tandem kayaks on this trip due to tidal conditions.
Satilla River Trip
The Satilla River is one of Georgia’s major but relatively unknown rivers. It begins by draining several small counties in Southwest GA and flows over 200 miles before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean just south of Jekyll Island. This river is very dependent on rainwater as you go upstream and can be tidally influenced up to 50 miles from the ocean. Naturally occuring tannins in the water make it tea-colored ( black water ) and make a lovely contrast to the blinding white sandbars that grace every bend of the upper Satilla. There are a lot of interesting Cypress, Tupelo, Willows, and Birch growing up to the water’s edge and lakes along the river make for easy exploring. The current is generally mellow and makes this river a great choice for anyone, families included, wanting to see a little piece of old south Georgia from a watery perspective.
Cathead Creek Loop
A glimpse into the upper part of Cathead Creek near Darien. This tributary of the Altamaha River gives one a sense of the majesty of this mighty river’s flood plain. Narrow rice canals and cypress swamps characterize this trip. An easy way to see this unique ecosystem. About 3 hours.
St. Simons Island Area Trips
Including paddling to Jekyll Island, Brunswick, and the beaches of Little St. Simons Island.
Some of our most popular trips are our 2 and 3 hour tours on St Simons Island and off of our dock in Brunswick. These tours are scheduled every day with times corresponding to the tides. We only need 2 participants to run on of these tours. We will teach you everything you need to know and you will have a guide with you the whole time. Even small children can have a great time checking out the wildlife from the front of a tandem kayak.
We also run longer tours across the St Simons Sound over to Jekyll Island and then on to our shop in Brunswick. This tour takes about 4 hours and is a great option for folks looking to do a more challenging trip.
Our full day trip out to the beaches of Little St Simons Island is a wonderful coastal kayaking trip. We begin the trip in a protected marsh creek on St Simons and follow it all the way to the ocean and the unspoiled beaches of Little St Simons Island for some shelling and birding. We will also have lunch on the beach.
