A National trust Main Street City, Brunswick is pursuing revitalization and enhancement through a comprehensive community development master plan aimed at preserving and expanding upon the city’s unique historic, architectural and cultural elements. The city center is enjoying a renaissance, with the on-going renovation and restoration of historic commercial and government buildings. The downtown district features a growing mix of antique and specialty shops, art galleries, restaurants and other businesses. Historic Downtown Brunswick is centered at the intersection of Newcastle and Gloucester Streets, the traditional commercial corridors of the city. Newcastle Street is anchored on the south end by Old City Hall, built in 1888. A $2,000,000 restoration, completed in 2004, marked the return of its distinctive clock tower, which was reproduced using modern material.

At the north end of Newcastle Street is the historic Ritz Theatre. Built in 1898as the Grand opera house, the Ritz Theatre is Brunswick and the Golden Isles’ center for quality exhibits and performances by local, regional, national and international artists.
