History of 1810 Inn
John West, Sr., grandfather of John Q West, received a grant of land within the Quaker reserve. The West family moved from North Carolina to St. Paul’s Parrish in 1766 and petitioned the governor in council of the province of Georgia for a grant of 350 acres on Little river, for which John West was granted in 1767. Many descendants of John West remained in this area, acquiring and farming large holdings of land on both sides of Little river in Wilkes and Columbia County, in which the original tract of the 1810 Inn land is on. The significant persons associated with the property are John Wade Butler, who owned the property from 1836-1866, and Thomas Butler West, John W. Butler’s grandson who bought the property from him in 1866, 11 months before his death. The house remained in the West family until it was sold to John Henry Hunt in 1939.
The overall character of the property is that of a very late 18th or early 19th century homestead. The house is a two story home bearing strong elements of the federal style. The main part of the building appears to have been originally built as a hall and parlor plantation plain house in the 1800’s. The porch space between the rear end rooms was enclosed around the 1940’s. All the other major additions involve pre-constructed buildings that were attached to the main house. The cook house was probably built around the 1870’s and connected to the main house shortly thereafter.
